Surviving Teen 2.0: The Sequel No One Warned Me About

Or, as Dr. Seuss might say: Teen-One, Teen-Two… Who Are You?

I thought I knew what to expect. I’d already survived the first round of adolescent metamorphosis with my oldest. Let’s call him Teen-One, aka pantry-raiding raccoon. I thought I had the roadmap: the screen-timer, the candy under lock and key. I believed I was prepared.

And then there is Tweeny, who is not even twelve yet… and I noticed something was happening. Something hormonal. Something mysterious. Something… teen-ish. He started turning into Teen-Two and… oh wow.

Enter the Sugar-Slicked Ninja

It started with the snacks. Teen-One has always been the one to consume, clearing out half the pantry in one sitting like a raccoon that got past the garbage can lock. I used to count on Tweeny to balance things out. He was the polite grazer, the one who’d ask gently if he could have “just one” cookie, who’d nibble slowly and stash the rest away in a locked box for later, mostly to protect it from his brother.

Now? He is the brother. The box still exists. But Teen-Two in the making, who technically should still be Tweeny, is no longer protecting the stash. He’s raiding it himself. Sneaking it. Decimating it in the shadows like a sugar-slicked ninja. It’s not a candy box anymore. It’s a war chest.

Screen Time or Scream Time?

And then came the screens.

We have a system. A solid, reasonable system: One hour of screen time early in the morning. Then off. Breakfast together. Life resumes.

They can earn more screen time later if they do outdoor activities, play sports, or hike with us. Simple. If screen time ends and it turns into scream time, we know we’ve crossed into addiction territory, and it’s time to dial it down.

Meals are electronics-free. (Yes, you too, Dad! Thanks for the parenting support, you adult teen since 1990!)

Once chores are done and Mom needs some me-time, I lovingly suggest: “Please, go back to your screens so I can go back to mine.”

These are the rules. Set in stone for Mom. Set in Play-Doh for Dad. Everything easy. Except… everything.

Dishwasher Chaos: Teen-One’s Morning Ritual

Teen-One takes this as a daily challenge.

Every morning, the moment I descend the stairs, screens vanish like guilty magic. And suddenly, he’s very busy. No time to greet me. He’s just remembered he urgently needs to go to the bathroom, put on clothes, bathe in deodorant, and style his hair.

But he knows the dishwasher is his chore. And what a chore it is.The plastic cupboard door flies open, Tupperware is launched inside with Olympic-level speed and accuracy (read: none), and the door slams shut before the avalanche escapes. That cupboard is a natural disaster. A geological layer of containers and mismatched lids.I open it, and a full-blown plastic tsunami floods my kitchen.Every. Single. Time.

Covert Ops: Tweeny’s Sneaky Missions

Meanwhile, Tweeny, mid-metamorphosis into sweet, sneaky Teen-Two, is learning the art of concealment.

He drifts out of the room with his phone half-hidden in his pocket. If I walk in unexpectedly, he jolts upright like someone just pulled the fire alarm and casually says something like, “I was just looking for socks.”

Outside, he hides in the hammock. Behind the sofa. In the stairway.Like he’s conducting a covert operation involving Minecraft and sour gummies.

Meanwhile his chore, folding the beach towels, kitchen towels, and tablecloths, piles up on his chair until he… moves them behind his chair.

And I’m watching all this unfold thinking…Wait.Weren’t you my well-behaved, cuddly, sweet, only slightly rule-bending Tweeny just five minutes ago?

Dear Tweeny, Mid-Metamorphosis into Teen-Two…

I see you changing.I see you hiding your phone and hoarding your snacks and giving me that almost-teen eye-roll when I ask you to please come help with literally anything.

I see your grumpy behavior, criticizing everything Teen-One does… while more and more turning into a duplicate of him.

But here’s the thing:I still see you.

Underneath the shifting moods and sugar cravings and side-eye sarcasm, you’re still my Tweeny. The one who steals another hug before going to bed.Another kiss before leaving for school. The one who asks how I slept… while Teen-One slams the door just to avoid having to say “Good morning.”

You are not quite the same Tweeny anymore. But you’re not a full-fledged Teeny either.

You’re something in between. And that something is wild, slightly crazy, sometimes maddening…And absolutely magnificent.

Because in between the slammed doors and stolen candy, there’s still that same kid you’ve always loved, just with a little more height, attitude, and sugar.
