My journey with low back pain started just like it has for so many others. It came out of nowhere, and suddenly I was living with an ache that wouldn’t go away. Painkillers only masked it, and nothing seemed to bring lasting relief.
I few years later, I discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) methods, and that’s when everything began to change.
Did you know that nearly 80% of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lives? It sure seems like modern life is taking a toll on our health!

As a TCM practitioner, I find it fascinating to look at a modern problem like chronic low back pain through the lens of ancient medicine. While the modern perspective sees back pain as just a physical ailment, ancient medicines like TCM take a deeper approach. Let me explain.
The Ancient Wisdom Behind Low Back Pain
In TCM, the concept of vital energy, or Qi, is key to understanding health and disease. Qi flows through pathways in the body, called meridians, nourishes the organs and maintains balance. When Qi is abundant and flows freely, the body thrives. Blockages and deficiencies lead to discomfort and disease. Simply put: Where there is free flow, there is no pain! Where there is no free flow, there is pain!
Low back pain in TCM is often linked to problems in the Kidney energy. The TCM Kidney plays a broader role than in Western medicine. It serves as the body’s reservoir of essence (Jing) and the foundation of vital energy. Weak Kidney Qi or low Jing can lead to chronic low back pain, fatigue, and even emotional issues like fear or insecurity.
In my own case, I realized that my low back pain wasn’t just physical. It was linked to a weakness or stagnation in my Kidney energy — in other words, a deficiency of my essence. This understanding completely shifted the way I approached managing my pain. I no longer saw it as just a physical problem; it was about weakness, stagnation, or deficiency of my essence!
In Ayurveda, the lower back is also seen as a center of vital energy, similar to the TCM Kidney system. And imbalances in prana (life force energy) can also cause pain, stiffness, and instability in the lower back. So both, TCM and Ayurveda, were telling us that low back pain is more than a physical issue, that it is reflecting a deeper energetic imbalance that requires holistic care.
Holistic Tools to Manage Low Back Pain
Moving Energy, Stretching, and Strengthening
I began to incorporate both QiGong and yoga as forms of energy work to help release blocked Qi and boost vital energy. These practices combine movement, breath, and meditation, and they have helped me immensely.
My go-to poses for low back pain in yoga are cat-cow, child’s pose, happy baby pose, and bridge pose. They are excellent for improving flexibility, strength, and alignment. Spinal twists are another favorite — they help keep my spine flexible and encourage the free flow of energy. When back pain keeps me up at night, I often grab my yoga mat and spend a few minutes doing these gentle stretches. It works wonders for releasing tension and helping me drift back to sleep.
And here’s where I add my secret weapon: moxa heat packs.Holistic Tools to Manage Low Back Pain
Moxa Heat Packs: A Warm Alternative to Painkillers
Heat therapy has been a key element of TCM for addressing pain and stagnation, and moxa packs are a modern version of this ancient practice. My miracle go-to alternative to painkillers are moxa heat packs. Seriously, these little green packs have been life-changing for me!
Moxa is made from mugwort and has warming and tonifying properties that deeply penetrate the body to relax muscles, improve circulation, and restore the flow of Qi.

I frequently rely on these heat packs at night, and they’ve truly been a game-changer for me. Just make sure to wrap them in a T-shirt or pillowcase, as they can get really hot and burn you while you sleep!
I even used a moxa pack during a backpacking trip, tucked between my pack and my back. I wouldn’t have made it through the trek without it. Once the moxa pack was in place, the pain disappeared so completely that I often forgot it was there — until I took my backpack off and the pain quickly returned.
The Power of Ancient and Modern Integration
As you see, managing low back pain is more than just popping pills — it’s a journey. And an important one! Because, as we just learned, it is not just about pain — it is about our essence! I appreciate that practices backed by ancient wisdom not only provide pain relief but also address the deeper imbalances, the root cause of the discomfort, aiming for a holistic approach to healing.
I hope that this inspires you to explore these simple yet powerful methods of healing and that you discover what works best for you!
Happy healing everyone!
