At 35, I was thrilled to learn I was pregnant after years of irregular cycles and debilitating PMS. But after a heartbreaking miscarriage, I was left wondering if my body could ever handle a pregnancy — until I discovered a path that changed everything.

Finding Answers Beyond Western Medicine
When I first heard that my uterus was “too cold and stagnant,” I didn’t understand. My periods had been irregular for years — sometimes as far apart as six weeks — and I dealt with migraines and PMS. After experiencing a heartbreaking miscarriage at 11 weeks, I felt lost. Western medicine gave me no clear answers, only the recommendation to try fertility treatments.
It was during this time of struggle that I sought out an acupuncturist. In this post, part of my mini-blog series on the Five Branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I share how this decision would not only changed my health but also sparked a lifelong passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
A TCM Perspective on Fertility
My acupuncturist approached my symptoms in a way I had never hear of before. She explained that my body showed signs of stagnation, that my energy (Qi) and blood weren’t flowing freely. The “cold” in my womb meant a deficiency in blood flow and vitality — a necessary environment for a baby to grow.
In TCM, the body is viewed as a dynamic system influenced by internal and external factors. My irregular cycles and difficulty conceiving weren’t isolated issues; they were part of a larger imbalance. My acupuncturist suggested we “warm the womb” through Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and lifestyle changes.
Healing Through Chinese Herbs
For the next five months, I committed to a regimen of Chinese herbs. These weren’t pre-made supplements but carefully crafted formulas tailored to my specific needs.

The formula aimed to regulate my cycle, invigorate blood flow and nourish my reproductive system. Some herbs warmed the uterus, while others supported my overall vitality. Slowly but surely, I began to notice changes.
- My periods became regular for the first time in years.
- PMS symptoms, including the migraines, eased.
- I felt more energized and less weighed down by emotional and physical stagnation.
A Life-Changing Surprise
I had already started the process of preparing for fertility treatments at a clinic, believing that conceiving naturally wasn’t an option for me. But before those treatments could begin, I discovered I was pregnant — naturally.
It was an incredible moment. The care and support I received through TCM had restored my body’s balance, making it possible to conceive without the interventions I had expected to need.
Why Chinese Herbs Work
Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest systems of natural healing, and for good reason. Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, herbal formulas are customized to address the root causes of imbalance in each individual.
For fertility, some commonly used herbs include:
- Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): Supports blood flow and nourishes the reproductive system.
- Bai Shao (White Peony): Balances hormones and soothes emotional stress.
- Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark): Warms and invigorates the uterus.
- Huang Qi (Astragalus): Strengthens overall energy and immunity.
These herbs work together to restore harmony in the body, creating an environment where life can thrive.
From Patient to Practitioner
This experience didn’t just transform my health — it changed my life. The profound impact of TCM inspired me to dive deeper, eventually becoming an acupuncturist myself. What began as a search for answers to my fertility challenges became a calling to help others.
My Only Regret: Not Discovering Chinese Herbs Sooner
I wish I had known about the power of Chinese herbs earlier. They could have saved me from countless days of painful PMS and migraines. They would have improved my overall physical and emotional well-being. But I simply didn’t know. This is why, today, I’m passionate about reaching young women — so they can benefit from these natural solutions earlier in life and experience better health and balance.
Hope After Miscarriage
If you’re struggling with fertility or other health challenges, know that there are options beyond what you might initially consider. Chinese herbs and TCM offer a holistic approach to healing, treating the body as a whole and working with its innate ability to restore balance.
