Cows milk is designed to turn a 65 pound calf into a several hundred pound adult cow within a year. (1)
Human breast milk is designed to make a baby grow physically slowly but generate rapid brain development.
The human species is the only one to drink milk from another species, and we are also the only species to drink milk after weaning age.
Milk is meant for babies. After weaning most humans (3/4 of the world population = 5 billion people!) loose the ability to digest milk (lactose).
Yes, adults are meant to be lactose intolerant! (2)
For most of history, milk was a very small part of food for very few people. It was more a survival food to help during winter months when it was difficult to grow other foods.
In times of war milk was used to fight malnutrition. So farmers switched from growing fruits and veggies to produce more dairy. After the war, demand decreased, but instead of stopping the large scale year-around milk production, dairy producers focused on big campaigns and milk adds convincing us to drink more milk. (3)
The federal dietary guidelines still recommend 3 servings of milk per day and school meals are still serving milk to students daily despite the fact that research has shown that the countries with the highest rates of dairy consumptions have the highest rates of osteoporosis, heart diseases and cancer. (5,6)
Fact is, thousands of babies are born healthy every year, but in the first five years of life lots of them get chronically sick with runny noses, coughs, allergies, asthma, eczema… So what we need to be aware of is that too much dairy and sugar simply causes acidity in the stomach causing acid reflux, colds and allergies. Thousands of children nowadays are taking medicine to treat these symptoms that could be eliminated by cutting out excessive sugar and dairy, and it wouldn’t even cost anything. (7)
Dairy products can be part of a healthy diet, but in moderate amounts. Despite what we are lead to believe, they are not essential. The nutrients we get from dairy can also come from fruits and veggies.
Calcium for example is the 5th most abundant element on the earth crust. Calcium is in the soil and in plants. There are many plant sources that are more calcium dense than dairy: dark leafy greens, basil, parsley, thyme, sesame seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, garlic, brazil nuts, almonds…
So, feed you kids healthy, simply by eliminating what makes them sick. And on top of it you can save the money you would spend on chocolate milk and cookies and the meds to fight the symptoms…
